MATT GAULDIE
ofWaterandStone paintings of Hawkes Bay
• Born 1976 Lower Hutt, New Zealand Matt has recently returned from France & Belgium where he was flown to by the New Zealand Government with a contingent of service men & women, civilians, & press to bring home “The Unknown Warrior” from the Somme Valley. The NZ Army has commissioned Gauldie to paint a series of 7 paintings of the final journey. The commissioned series will be unveiled on Anzac Day 2005 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wellington. This series has been of particular interest to the artist as his ongoing objective in his art is to discover his culture and the NZ experience. ofWaterandStone is a collection of work painted in Hawkes Bay at his Te Awanga Studio. His other bodies of regional work include the Ranfurly/Maniototo collection 2001; and a series of nudes all painted in or around his studio In Wellington. Gauldie did a semester of oil painting and art history at the University of Hawaii, returning to Elam School of Arts, Auckland University to do two years studying design. He left to pursue a career in portrait painting, and since 2000 has exhibited regularly in Wellington and Auckland. This is Matt’s first solo exhibition in Hawkes Bay. He commutes regularly between his beach front studio in Te Awanga and his Shelly Bay studio in Wellington.
